I know, I alone
the feelings of a frozen heart
Disbelief and shut eyes
No solace in the inner thought
Only I, only I
Ego is the real cause
Because the world is full of suffering
and I get to write my demons out. Privilege.
NaPoWriMo Day 23: Today, I’d like to challenge you to write a poem that responds, in some way, to another. This could be as simple as using a line or image from another poem as a jumping-off point, or it could be a more formal poetic response to the argument or ideas raised in another poem.
I chose Fernando Pessoa’s ‘I Know, I Alone’, which is quite an effortless exploration of the feelings of an individual. I recognise the privilege writers have to articulate our inner feelings as poetry, while there is suffering all around. So, my poem is a response to Pessoa as I see recognising this privilege as the first step towards doing something about the world around us, which in turn dictates our feelings.
